Herbs are more than just useful for cooking and deserve to be grown prominently in the garden where they can provide year round colour and interest! They are attractive plants with many roles to play in the garden and home!  Herbs have, of course, provided pleasure for centuries, as appealing and aromatic garden plants, as well as having beneficial medicinal, culinary and cosmetic uses. We have previously offered a selection of hardy perennial herbs which are ideally suited to, and have traditionally been used as, formal edging/hedging.

Designs can range from simple, practical, one plant edging to vegetable plots, lawns or pathways to intricate knot gardens on a small or large scale.

Low box hedging around vegetable plots was found long ago to have the  benefit of breaking cold winds and providing protection for young vegetable seedlings, as well as providing an attractive formality to the vegetable plot.

Other herb edging/hedging can be similarly utilised, with the added reputed organic benefits of companion planting, deterring pests and diseases.  For example, Thyme, Winter Savory, Hyssop and Rosemary produce flowers which attract bees and aid pollination, particularly of beans and peas.  Hyssop plants, also, if grown near cabbages, reputedly, attract away cabbage white butterflies.  Chives are said to benefit soft fruits and carrots and are thought to repel blackfly, greenfly and to help roses recover from blackspot, as well as improving the flowers' scent!

It would appear that aromatic herbs are not themselves prone to many pests because their volatile oils act as an insecticide.

The potential heights of the different herbs provided are given under the individual plant descriptions, however, they can be kept clipped to required heights and shapes, for classical formality, or left to grow into their natural forms, although these too will benefit from occasional trimming to aid health and vigour.

Even if you grow the herbs with the prime intention of creating formal planted designs, the trimmings can still, of course be used for cooking, pot pourri, herbal oils and decoctions if wished.

We hope that you find these few pages of notes and ideas of interest and assistance.

Edged beds can

be planted with

perennials or annual bedding plants.

We hope that you will find the selected herbs of interest. Now that we have started to have the time and cleared space to start on our own garden area it is a pleasure to be able to enjoy these herbs in a garden setting (rather than in "blocks" in nursery beds) - looking good, as well as smelling good, especially when the plants are sited so as to be brushed against thus releasing their scents.

Edging a pathway with lavender would be a lovely way to visually enjoy this attractive plant as well as to release its scent as you and your visitors brush past.
